No class!

Well I submitted my portfolio definitions but don't quite know how Matt wanted them done so I just did them in a word type document. There was only 4 of us that showed up to class today and I thought maybe I was thinking this was a different day. But I knew it was Friday and not Thursday because I had bowling league last night and I shot 277 278 258 813 series :) I was pretty stoked about it too! Well anyways gonna head down to my mail box to see if my book came in. I hope that's what he had in mind for the definitions?

The Book

Well just got done getting Nonlinear 4 the book I was talking about in one of my past blogs. I think this should give me some good insight on the digital video editing details I need for when I get a job. Also set up a meeting with my mentor Mark Vasco and we are gonna go over some editing ideas and he is also going to let me edit a couple commercials maybe. We shall see....

Also haven't made it to the book store to check out that book, it's been a stressfull week. I will this week though.

Logo

Well I worked on my logo and made some changes and added my name to it. I think it came out pretty well. I changed the squares on the film piece and then changed the font of the "M" in the middle of the film piece. I was thinking that would be good enough for my logo. But then I decided to add my name and put editing underneath the logo and actually I didn't think I was going to like it but all in all I think it really came out great. So let me know what you think if anyone see's the logo. Thanks for the feedback.

Writing Strategies

The DACC English and communication department came in and went over writing. They had a lot of good stuff to say and they brought up some things that are really important pertaining to everyday life. They gave us a hand out to fill out and these are my answers to the questions.

What is my task?
To gain the interest of my audience, viewer, reader and to keep them interested in what I have to offer or say on a subject.

What is my purpose?
To be creditable on what subject I'm talking about, so when the reader, viewer, my audience leaves knowing I'm not full of "BS" and I'm knowledgeable.

Who is my audience?
My audience would be pretty much everyone. Visual medium reaches all walks of life.

What type of document is best for this task?
Both word and picture combo document

What strategies should I use to achieve my purpose?
To tell a story with both words and pictures. Because picture medium crosses the language boundaries and you can communicate without words. But then the words enforce the meaning behind the pictures.

I'm glad they came in because it really reminded me how important writing is no matter what field of expertise your in.

Research

I was doing some research on editing and this is what I saw on answer.com post,
High end television commercial editor: $7500.00 - $10000.00 per week.
Low end television commercial editor: $4000.00 - $6000.00 per week
High end Oscar award winning Hollywood movie editor: $15000.00 per week
Average Hollywood movie editor: $3500.00 per week.
Low end Hollywood movie editor: $2700.00 per week.
Arthouse ( Sundance-ish ) movie editor: $0.00-$1200.00 per week ( $500.00 average ).
Artful theatrical documentary editor: $500.00-$1200.00 per week.
Artful television documentary editor ( PBS ): $2000.00-$3500.00 per week.
Cable documentary editor ( History/NatGeo/Discovery etc ) $1800-$3000.00 per week.
Verite based reality television editor: $2500.00-$3500.00 per week.
So there is some money to be made as an editor. Also was looking at another blog that the editor mention a book Nonlinear 4 by Ron Diamond that I will be checking out as well.

Looking for Research

I was struggling bad trying to research my career goals to find how much an editor makes and how a person can get into the career field. I then asked my roommate for some help because he is a CMI major and it was so simple I felt a litte stupid. All he did was put in "how much do hollywood editors make" and there was a list of stuff that came up. So on with the paper!! Also I have an idea for my logo just don't know if its copying someone else? We shall see.

Day 3 of class

Went over my career goals with Matt and realized that I still need a lot of work when going into my career. I think I need to do some soul searching and really finding deep down inside what I am shooting for. When I do I need to hang my hat on it and call my own like I do with my bowling. I need to start getting confident with my choices in this field. Also I went to the White Sands Movie Festival acting course they had on last Saturday at the Rio Grande Theater. Mark Vasco got me into the seminar, thank you Mark! I learned a lot about what actors have to go through and what the producers and directors want from them. I think this will help when editing a film.
